Freezing Leftover BBQ
Friday, January 9, 2009 at 7:49PM If you're like me, once you get the cooker running you tend to cook waaay more than you can eat at a single sitting. Now, I like having leftover BBQ around but there are times when I'd like to freeze some for later too. I've just never had great luck doing this.
So I've had my eye on a vacuum sealer for a while and even had one on my wish list for Christmas. After doing a little shopping, my wife informed that she didn't want another appliance on the kitchen counter, nor did she want to have to store it so I resigned myself to not having one. Then my dear mother mentioned that she'd seen a report on TV comparing traditional vacuum sealers with the Reynolds Handi-Vac and that for most things the Handi-Vac did just as well.
So off to the local discount store I went with the requisite number of dead presidents in hand and returned with the Handi-Vac and a box of bags. This weekend, I smoked a pork butt and tried out the new widget on the leftovers.
It certainly removed all the air from bag and reduced the overall size of the
package. After a few days, the packages don't show any sign of freezer burn or ice. When I use one of the packages of leftovers I'll post an update on the results.
If this little gizmo works well, and I'm hopeful that it will, I'll have enough cash leftover to buy another new BBQ widget. That's the best part!
Do you have any experience with a Handi-Vac vs. vacuum sealer? Post a comment and let me know the pros and cons of each.
Cheers,
